Magic Valley Mall is the only regional shopping center within a hundred-mile radius. The shopping center is located at the intersections of Blue Lakes Boulevard North and Pole Line Road in Twin Falls, Idaho. Both are state highways. The College of Southern Idaho is located approximately one mile from the shopping center and has a student population of 10,000. The mall was opened in 1986 and in the past twenty years, the retail face of the market has changed dramatically. Big box companies such as The Home Depot, Office Max, PetsMart, Target, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Best Buy, Old Navy and Costco are located across the road from the shopping center. They have found a profitable home in this area. In the past few years, the market has seen the birth of many new retailers and new job opportunities for local residents. The primary choice for retail locations is now on Blue Lakes Boulevard and Pole Line Road.

Twin Falls started early this century through the vision of I.B. Perrine, who diverted water from the Snake River to turn the area’s high desert into a “MagicValley.” Today, these irrigated fields are among the worlds’ most productive. This abundance has led many of the nation’s top food processors to set up major facilities in the Twin Falls area such as Lamb Weston, Falls Brand Meats, Ore-Ida, Simplot, Coors, Seneca Foods, and Amalgamated Sugar. The MagicValley is also home to the world’s largest commercial trout farm, Clear Springs Foods, and the largest cheese manufacturer in the Northwest, Glanbia. Southern Idaho is also a leader in the aquaculture and dairy industries. Twin FallsCounty is one of the most densely developed agricultural areas in the United States. In addition, Dell Computers has a growing tech support center in Twin Falls.

Housing growth is significant in Twin Falls. Idaho commerce and labor website reports growth in new homes in Twin Falls from 25,595 in 2000 to 28,025 in 2000, up 9.5%. Throughout the valley the growth is consistent with about 35 subdivisions being developed, currently at various stages within a 15 mile radius. According to statistics from the Twin Falls Building Department, 664 single-family dwelling permits were issued in 2005, nearly twice the number that had been issued in 2002. There were 400 permits in 2003 and 438 in 2004.

Manufacturing is on the rise here, too. Over the past decade, new employers include Jayco (motor homes & trailers), Seastrom Manufacturing (precision parts) and Clear Shield National (now a division of Solo Cup; plastic straws, cups and flatware). Other manufacturing companies in the area include Spears (plastic pipe), Charmac (trailers), Longview Fibre (corrugated containers), Moore Business Solutions (printed forms), and Farmhouse Collection (furniture).

Idaho welcomes about 23 million visitors annually. Twin Falls is the retail and service hub of South Central Idaho and Northern Nevada, boasting a market of more than 225,000 people and about a billion dollars in annual retail sales. The retail boom and population growth has led to a robust construction trade too. Travelers pass through Twin Falls to popular locations such as world-famous Sun Valley, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Craters of the Moon, and Jackpot, Nevada. Area attractions in the Magic Valley include Thousand Springs, The Oregon Trail, Hagerman Fossil Beds, Hot Springs, Shoshone Ice Caves, White Water Rafting, the City of Rocks and in 2008 the completion of the regional L.D.S. Temple.
